Whakapapa Lodge
The Clubs premier on-mountain accommodation, the NSC Whakapapa lodge is located in the Iwikau Village high on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu, just 150m south west from the carpark at the top of the Bruce Road. Built on the site of the Club's original building (which was burnt down by fire in 1987), it has won an architectural award for the excellence of its design. With 32 beds, impressive exposed beams, natural timber cladding, extensive stonework, and a comfortable interior, this is one of the most sought after places to stay on the mountain.
For most of the season, usually July - October, there is a custodian in residence, preparing evening meals and breakfasts. However for 2023 ski season there will be no Custodian although there are staple pantry supplies and weekend meals are organised in advance.
When staying at the lodge, it is necessary to bring a towel, sheets, and a pillowslip - duvets and pillows are provided. Members are able to host non-members to the Club, and all participate in a simple roster of duties, coordinated by a Lodge Officer who is also a senior Club Member.
What better opportunity to end a days skiing on the Mountain by skiing off the slopes directly to the front door of the lodge - followed by a sauna, hot shower, followed by good conversation and hospitality around a roaring fire.
The Lodge is available for use at other times of the year (a minimum of 5 persons) to enjoy the outdoors in this magnificent location. Try using the lodge as a base for mountain walks, bush walks, fishing, golf, and just enjoying everything that the Tongariro National Park has to offer.
